Scarf / Foulard

I made a scarf, but before seeing it you will have to read through my rambling account about my love of Hermès & the Liberty Scarf Hall. The New York Times published a month ago an article about the scarf as the new "it" accessory. Being half French, I am apparently genetically predisposed to own & wear scarves. The more the better, and thankfully there are a few Hermès scarves in the stash. Travelling hasn't helped in recent months since they open a small Hermès shop at the CDG airport. Duty free + Hermès =  and you will get from me a reaction similar to one of a kitty put in front of fresh catnip. My last investment (yes it is something to keep & pass along) is the "Fleurs d'Indiennes" scarf below.

As an extra on the website the excellent Hermes PDF to learn how to tie your scarf:
Another fabulous place to go scarf shopping is the Liberty scarf hall, with a selection that is anything but boring. Liberty also release some great tutorial videos on how to tie your scarf on their Youtube channel (the French accent of their scarf expert has been qualified from anywhere from "charming" to "annoying", if you can't deal with the froggy accent cut the sound the videos are pretty self-explanatory).

I finally make it to my creation: a 51x51 inches of silk heaven, all hand hemmed (not sure I quite mastered the rolled edge...). I followed the advice of Lauranne Plat, the Liberty scarf expert, when modelling the scarf below.

Back home and finally back to making things. Today a pair of very geometric earrings using beaded chain and ribbons ends. I used a medium ribbon end measuring 1cm or 3/8 inch and 4 pieces of the chain measuring 4 cm/ 1.5 inch.
Put some glue in the "mouth" of the ribbon end. Insert the 1st bead of each of the 4 pieces of chain in the mouth of the ribbon end. Once the 4 pieces are in place close the ribbon end with plyers.

Part 2 of what  I did with the flowers created here.
A few strand of fake pearls get a lifting with the pretty flowers. Reminds me of something I could find here.

Camouflage tote / Cabas camouflage

I was reading through the January/February copy of the online interior design magazine Lonny when I saw this L.L. Bean's Hunter tote on page 20. Lonny's Editor in Chief, Michelle Adams makes a very good point that camouflage & leopard prints can be considered as neutrals (I would add to the list nautical stripes from sailor shirts) which can be mixed with floral prints and pretty much any color. So back to the LL Bean tote, I was motivated to order it, but gave up as shipping internationally is always a costly hassle. And anyway how hard could it be to make my own version? How about a girlier version with a little lot more sparkle (ok lets be honnest I am aiming for the love child of the L.L. Bean tote & a Vanessa B. bag!).
The pattern I used (in cm, I just can't deal with inches, sorry it does not make sense :-)!). Cut the same pieces for a lining, I used a black fabric.
Outside of the bag: sew the bottom to the front & back, press seams.
Sew the strap (the one I used is 5 cm wide) on the outside of the bag. I allowed for 50 cm for the handles which is just long enough to carry the bag at the shoulder.
Don't forget the sequins! I used sequins on a ribbon & did not sew any on the handles, as I was afraid of the wear & tear.

Finally, I added a little pocket to the inside of the bag. I also created separation when I sewed it to the lining to create compartments for my cell, metro pass etc. Once done, I finished sewing the lining & assembled to the outside of the bag.
Here is the result:
Voilà le résultat:

A huge bag just like Mary Poppins' bag!

I am not much of knitter, I can do it, but I can't say I really enjoy it. So typically I work on "small" projects, and even those seem to drag on for years days. Introducing today a variation on the snood. I adapted the snood concept so the scarf would not end up in a puddle would mimick a scarf by wrapping closely the neck of Violette (5), while staying on that same little neck.
I simply knitted a rectangle that I sewed on the edges (see the very "sophisticated" drawing below). It stays on tighly and it is really warm. Did I also mention that it is also pink and sparly :-)

Holiday chic! / Chic c'est les fêtes!

Today, some "make-at-your-own-risk" gorgeousness. The risky part is using the candle appropriately and making sure you get near it with the fabric to melt the edges of the petals. No burning allowed! First of all the supplies for this project (click on the picture for more details):

For the next step make sure you work over a non flammable surface. That way if the petal sets itself on fire you can simply drop it on the non flammable surface below (and not suffer a third degree burn!).
For the large flower melt the edges of 6 large petals & 6 medium petals. For the medium flower melt the edges of 6 medium petals & 6 small petals.
Now what to do with all these flowers? Sew them on a top? As a pin? A necklace? Answer in the next episode.
Maintenant que faire avec toutes ces fleurs? Sur un vêtement? En broche? En collier? Suite au prochain épisode.
